These standards are prepared by sputtering or plating thin films onto various metal and non-metal substrates. They may be used to calibrate XRF instruments to measure coating thickness and composition of sample films on a specific or narrow range of substrates, matching or closely resembling the substrate composition of these standards. They have the advantage of being more durable and robust as well as lower cost.
